King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain this afternoon headed to Barcelona for the annual 2024 Planet Prize headed at the National Museum of Art of Catalonia. This year also marked the 75th anniversary of Grupo Planeta, founded by José Manuel Lara Hernández.
In 1952, the founder of Editorial Planeta and of Grupo Planeta, José Manuel Lara Hernández, established a prize for novels with prize money totaling 40,000 pesetas (240.40 euros) to recognise the Spanish authors, encourage their social presence and put their name and work before a wider public.
The value of the prize today (1,000,000 euros for the winning prize and 200,000 for the runner-up) has made it the largest in the world for previously unpublished novels, while the winning and runner-up works are repeatedly positioned in the lists of best sellers. The LXXIII edition of the Planet Prize has a high participation; a total of 1,070 novels have been presented this year. This year the award went to Paloma Sánchez-Garnica for her novel “Victoria.”
