King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia of Spain have arrived in Oviedo for The Princess of Asturias Awards. The Spanish Royal Family will be attending various events ahead of tomorrow’s awards night. The Princess of Asturias awards are staple event in the Spanish Royal Family’s Autumn Calendar.
As the Royal Protocol dictates, King Felipe and his heir, Princess Leonor, did not travel in the same aircraft tonight. A protocol, that the Spanish Royal family tends to avoid usually. The separate arrival in Oviedo meant the Royals did not have much time before the concert once they arrived. Also Felipe’s hand bandage was back again today. The CasaReal revealed that its just a preventive measure to avoid any further injury to King’s hand.
The Prince/Princess of Asturias is the official title of the heir to the Spanish Throne. The Title was first created in the 14th century by John I of Castile. The first holder of the title was his elder son, Henry. The current holder of the title is King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia’s elder daughter Princess Leonor.

This was Infanta Sofia’s first public appearance since she joined the UWC Atlantic college Wales in August this year. At that time CasaReal released some candid pictures to mark her departure from Madrid and arrival in Wales. Although the school break starts from next weekend, Sofia has taken an early break to make sure she is present for the one of the most important event of Spanish Royal Calendar.
The first event of the award ceremony was the traditional musical concert at the ‘Prince Felipe’ Auditorium on the eve of the award ceremony. As expected the family is staying at their usual headquarters in Oveido – Reconquista Hotel. The Princess of Asturias Foundation was established in 1980 and since then the foundation has been link between the Royal Family and a region that was once known as Kingdom of Asturias.

David from Spanish Royal Jewel has written a bit more about the history behind the title of Prince/Princess of Asturias.
For more than 3 decades, every year the foundation recognizes the scientific, technical, cultural, social and humanitarian work carried out by individuals, institutions, groups of people or institutions at the international level, they are awarded in eight categories: Arts, Letters, Social Sciences, Communication and Humanities, Scientific and Technical Research, International Cooperation, Concord and Sports.
King Felipe VI’s holds the honorary Presidency of the Foundation as Princess Leonor is still a minor but the end of the October will change that fact as Leonor will be celebrating her 18th birthday this year. The Palace has scheduled various events to mark the milestone birthday of the Future Queen.
The Concert “With a Certain Taste of Peace” featured Symphony Orchestra of the Principality of Asturias and the Choir of the Princess of Asturias Foundation, and led by the master Martyn Brabbins, played “Fantasy on a theme by Thomas Tallis and Dona nobis pacem by Ralph Vaughan Williams” – concluding with the Anthem of Asturias.
After the concert, The Royal Family met with the Orchestra team, the guests who attended the concert and members of public who were waiting for them outside. As always, The Spanish Royals stood for many photographs and selfies with the guests before calling it a night.
