The Princess of Asturias, Leonor, today, began the next phase of her royal life and began 3 years long Military Training. The first leg of the training will be completed at the General Military Academy Zaragoza where her father King Felipe VI was also trained. Leonor arrived at the Military Academy with her father King Felipe VI, mother Queen Letizia and younger sister Infanta Sofia. The day has been a much-awaited moment of the Spanish Royal Family’s this summer schedule.
It was announced earlier in the year that instead of going to university, Leonor will go for a 3 years long military training with all forms of military – starting with the Army, then Navy, and lastly Air Force. The beginning of Military training is not the only milestone for Princess Leonor this year. She will be turning 18 on October 31st too. A huge milestone when it comes to the Royal children who are the direct heirs to the thrones. Earlier this year, she finished her high school at the UWC Atlantic College in Wales
During the first year 2023-2024 she will be training at the Military Academy in Zaragoza from where she will graduate as the Dame-Cadet. In August 2024, Leonor will then head to Marín Naval Military Academy for a couple of months before a training journey aboard the teaching ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano. All the Naval cadets are required to go through this training journey. Princess Leonor will graduate from the Naval Academy as Midshipman.
The last phase of the training will start in August 2025, when Leonor will train at the Military Training at San Javier General Air Academy from where she will graduate as Lieutenant Cadet.
Military training is an essential part for the future Monarchs of the country as the Spanish Monarch is also the Captain General of the Army. In July this year, speaking at the Princess of Girona foundation awards, Leonor talked about the upcoming phase of her life and how excited she is about it.
“I am about to start a new stage with a period of military training. And, beyond my responsibility, I am happy because I know how much the Spanish value our Armed Forces. It is an important moment in my life” – The Princess of Asturias
The General Military Academy founded in 1882, through its three periods of activity, has trained more than 29,000 officers of the Army, Civil Guard and Common Corps of the Armed Forces. The Academy prepares its cadets for a long and proud military careers by providing a solid foundation.
The family arrived in Zaragoza just before the noon. Upon arrival at the Academy, The Royal family was received by the Director of the Military Academy.
It’s been made clear by the Palace that Leonor will be just like other cadets at the training with no special treatment behind the walls of the academy. Today’s welcome at the academy in the presence of Media was the only glimpse of her time at the academy that will be shared with the general public.
The Royal family stood for a photograph and answered a few questions from the media before Leonor wished her family farewell. Leonor told media that she is quite nervous and excited about the new phase at the same time. Felipe answered few more questions on the behalf of the family. Then Leonor shared hugs with her parents and younger sister and headed to join other 610 new students.
Then she joined her batch mates for the formal admission process and headed inside the training center. The Princess will be following the regular routine of 06:30 AM to 11:00 PM at the Academy and will be sharing residence with other students.
